When you think of the word “mentor”, who- or what- comes to your mind?
My first mentor actually became my mentor without either of us realizing it. His name was Dr Neil Clark Warren, and though he eventually became the founder of EHarmony.com (here’s the proof: http://bit.ly/2JbSI8u), at the time I just knew him as my friend’s “religious dad”. I was regularly attending young life club with his daughter, and one day he looked at me with a big smile and said “Laurie, I think you will go to seminary someday”. At the time, I was barely a Christian and I thought he was deluded. When I went to seminary 7 years later, I realized the power of what he did with his words.
They took root in me and without me consciously knowing it, they took part in forming my path.
That’s what mentors do.
In this week’s podcast I share some words from 3 different mentors that helped shape my life. (The things they share are worth the podcast).
But I also talk about the different packages mentoring comes in, to “demystify” the intimidation factor the word sometimes holds. Because our call is not only to find a mentor but be one. That’s what 2 Timothy 1:2 says.
The word “mentor” sometimes scares us, and many of us think “I can’t do that.” But mentoring is simply the willingness to show up in someone else’s life to listen and share what you see. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being present.
And nudging them- while they nudge you- closer to Jesus.
Find people you respect who can speak words into your life.
Find people you can encourage by speaking words that will shape their life.
